Honing Process: The Efficient Solution for Bore Sizing and Finishing

 

Honing is the ultra-precise bore machining process trusted by job shops and manufacturers to create parts that perform at the highest levels of speed, reliability, and efficiency. No boring or grinding process is capable of delivering such precise levels of roundness, straightness, and surface geometry at a lower cost per part.

How Honing Works

The honing process uses a set of engineered abrasive stones arranged around a tool or mandrel. The tool spins as it is stroked in and out of the bore, while at the same time the abrasive stones are expanded against the wall of the bore. Together these rotational and reciprocal movements grind away at the interior surface of the bore to achieve precise bore geometry and surface finish.

The honing process is used to achieve a precision hole size and an improved surface finish. A honing machine is composed of fine grain abrasive stones which are attached to an expandable mandrel. The mandrel is then slowly rotated and oscillated inside the bore with an oil lubrication until the desired geometry is obtained. Honing is typically an operation that directly follows an ID drilling/boring process. It is intended to provide a smoother finish and it can improve the geometric form of the bore. The smaller the grain that is used, the smoother the finish will be. The improved shape of the bore after honing often results in a higher precision component.

Deliver remarkable improvements in finish bore size, geometry and surface finish with extremely tight tolerances held as close as .0002″ on most parts. Honing creates a high bearing area ratio, low surface roughness and a defined cross hatch pattern for lubricant retention.

Higher Precision From the Start - The Deep Hole Drilling Process

 

Deep hole drilling is the process frequently used for initial hole generation in large-scale industrial parts, deep hole drilling delivers exemplary levels of precision and efficiency to a wide variety of manufacturing applications.

BTA drilling is a deep hole drilling process that uses a specialized drilling tool on a long drill tube to produce deep holes in metal, from holes with a diameter of 20 mm [0.80 in] and larger, up to depth-to-diameter ratios of 400:1. BTA drilling is the most effective method of drilling deep holes, as it is a cleaner, more reliable and capable process than conventional twist drills, and can achieve larger diameters and higher feed rates than the alternative gun drilling.

How Deep Hole Drilling Works

 

The deep hole drilling process was first developed in response to a growing demand for straight, accurate gun barrels. The process is now commonly used for machining any hole with a large diameter-to-depth ratio. Although many of the basic principles of drilling still apply, deep hole drilling employs various machine set-ups. The machines use ultra-high pressures to cut and remove chips evenly without damaging the workpiece

BTA drilling tool heads are threaded or mounted onto long drill tubes and use multiple cutting surfaces on a single tool to remove chips efficiently, exhausting them using high-pressure coolant through holes in the tool head, then out the drill tube and through the machining spindle. BTA tooling is available in brazed or inserted carbide configurations.

BTA stands for Boring and Trepanning Association and is also sometimes referred to as STS (single tube system) drilling, as it uses one single drill tube for the BTA tool, compared to other processes such as ejector drilling, which use two.

 

Drilling hole             : BTA drilling method, remove the cutting chips backward through drill bar.

Boring hole             : Adopt push boring method, remove the cutting chips forward through the

                                   basic hole of workpiece.

Trepanning hole      : Adopt internal oil supply and external cutting chips removal method.

After having drilled a hole of desired diameter with solid drilling operation we use Counter boring or finish boring deep hole drilling process to enlarge the existing bore or to remove the excess stock.  We use Counter boring operation in order to overcome the limitation of solid drilling. With counter boring operation we have successfully achieved the depth of hole up to 6 meters.
